Introduction

Every pixel on screen is defined by a color value, but that value can be expressed in multiple formats — hexadecimal for CSS, RGB for canvas drawing, HSL for design-system tokens, and HSV for color-selection algorithms. A color picker provides a unified interface where you select or input a color once and instantly see its representation in every common format, eliminating the mental math of converting between HEX and RGB or the guesswork of translating a hex code into HSL saturation and lightness percentages.

What Is Color Picker?

A color picker is a visual selection tool built around an HSB (hue-saturation-brightness) color model. A large gradient area lets you pick the saturation and brightness for the currently selected hue, while a separate hue slider cycles through the full 360° spectrum. As you drag, the tool computes and displays the current color in HEX (#FF6B35), RGB (rgb(255, 107, 53)), HSL (hsl(16, 100%, 60%)), and HSV (hsv(16, 79%, 100%)) formats simultaneously.

The picker also provides an eyedropper mode that uses the browser's EyeDropper API (or a screen-capture fallback) to sample any color visible on your display — a competitor's website, a design mockup in Figma, or a photograph in another browser tab. This eliminates the tedious workflow of taking a screenshot, opening it in an image editor, and using its color sampler tool. A single click samples the pixel and all format conversions are immediately available.

For design-system consistency, the tool maintains a history of recently picked colors and lets you pin favorites. It also calculates the closest named CSS color (e.g., "coral" or "tomato") and the nearest Tailwind CSS utility class (e.g., "orange-500") so you can use semantic names in your stylesheets rather than hard-coded hex values that become meaningless six months later.

Key Features of Color Picker

  • Full-spectrum HSB gradient selector with separate hue, saturation, and brightness controls
  • Simultaneous display in HEX, RGB, HSL, and HSV formats with one-click copy for each
  • Eyedropper mode for sampling any on-screen color from other browser tabs or applications
  • CSS named-color matching that finds the nearest standard color name like "coral" or "steelblue"
  • Tailwind CSS class lookup that maps the picked color to the closest utility class in the default palette
  • Color history and favorites panel for quick access to previously selected brand colors
  • WCAG contrast checker showing contrast ratio against white and black with AA/AAA pass/fail indicators

How It Works

1

Pick a Color Visually or Enter a Value

Use the interactive color spectrum, hue slider, and saturation-brightness square to visually locate the exact shade you need. Alternatively, type a known HEX, RGB, or HSL value into the input field and the picker instantly centers on that precise color in the visual selector.

2

See All Format Conversions in Real Time

As you adjust the picker, the tool simultaneously displays the selected color in HEX, RGB, and HSL notation. Each format updates instantly without clicking a convert button, so you can compare how the same color is expressed across all three systems while making your selection.

3

Copy Your Preferred Format with One Click

Click the copy icon next to any format to send it straight to your clipboard. The copied string uses standard CSS syntax, so you can paste it directly into a stylesheet, design token file, or component prop without any manual adjustment.

Who Uses This

UI Designers

sampling colors from a design mockup and copying them in the exact HEX or RGB format their component library requires without switching between design software and code

Frontend Developers

picking hover and focus state colors during implementation and grabbing the corresponding HSL values for CSS custom properties with opacity variations

Digital Artists

exploring the color spectrum to find the perfect accent shade for an illustration, then copying the RGB values into their drawing application's color dialog

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I input a color name like 'coral' instead of a code?
The color picker primarily accepts HEX, RGB, and HSL values. CSS named colors are not directly parsed in the input field, but you can look up the HEX equivalent of any named color and enter that instead for the same result.
Does the picker support alpha transparency?
The current version focuses on solid colors in HEX, RGB, and HSL formats. For RGBA or HSLA with transparency, note the opaque color values here and add the alpha channel manually in your CSS using the appropriate function syntax.
How accurate are the visual picker colors compared to my screen?
The picker renders colors using standard sRGB color space, which matches the vast majority of web displays. Professional print or P3-wide-gamut work may require calibration tools beyond what a browser-based picker can guarantee.
