Color Converter

Convert colors between HEX, RGB, and HSL formats instantly. Includes a color picker and live preview.

Introduction

CSS supports four color formats — hexadecimal (#FF6B35), RGB (rgb(255, 107, 53)), HSL (hsl(16, 100%, 60%)), and the newer HWB — and each format is preferred in different contexts. Design tools output HEX, Canvas APIs expect RGB, design-system tokens use HSL for easy shade generation, and preprocessors like SCSS work with any of them. A color converter instantly translates between all of these representations so you never have to manually split a hex string into red/green/blue channels or calculate hue from Cartesian coordinates.

What Is Color Converter?

A color converter accepts a color value in any supported format — HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, HSLA, HSV, CMYK, or HWB — and computes its equivalent in every other format. The conversion algorithms handle the full mathematical pipeline: HEX to RGB by parsing hexadecimal digit pairs, RGB to HSL by converting Cartesian (red, green, blue) coordinates to cylindrical (hue, saturation, lightness) coordinates, and the inverse transformations back. Alpha channel values are preserved across RGBA and HSLA conversions.

The converter also handles edge cases that trip up manual conversion. Achromatic colors (pure grays) have a hue of 0° in HSL, but this is arbitrary — the tool correctly identifies when saturation is 0% and labels the hue as "undefined" rather than implying a red tint. Similarly, CMYK to RGB conversion accounts for the fact that CMYK is a subtractive print model and RGB is an additive screen model, noting that the conversion is an approximation since the color gamuts do not perfectly overlap.

For developers working with Android or iOS native code, the tool additionally outputs platform-specific formats: Android's 0xAARRGGBB integer format and iOS UIKit's UIColor(red:green:blue:alpha:) initializer with normalized 0.0-1.0 float values. This eliminates the tedious manual division of 8-bit channel values by 255 that mobile developers otherwise perform every time they port a web color to a native app.

Key Features of Color Converter

  • Two-way conversion between HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, HSLA, HSV, CMYK, and HWB formats
  • Alpha channel preservation across RGBA and HSLA conversions with 0-1 and 0-255 opacity scales
  • Platform-specific output for Android (0xAARRGGBB) and iOS UIColor with normalized float values
  • Input auto-detection that recognizes the format from the value's syntax without requiring a format selector
  • Shorthand hex expansion converting #F83 to #FF8833 and shorthand contraction where applicable
  • Visual preview swatch showing the color alongside all converted values for at-a-glance verification
  • One-click copy for any individual format or copy all formats at once in a structured block

How It Works

1

Paste or Type a Color in Any Supported Format

Enter your color value in HEX, RGB, or HSL notation. The converter auto-detects which format you have provided, so there is no need to select the input type manually. It handles shorthand HEX codes, comma-separated RGB values, and degree-percent HSL strings.

2

Instant Cross-Format Conversion

The moment your input is recognized, the tool calculates the equivalent values in the other two formats. Conversion uses standard sRGB math, ensuring that the resulting HEX, RGB, and HSL values all describe the identical perceptual color without rounding discrepancies.

3

Copy the Converted Value You Need

Each output format has its own copy button, so you can grab exactly the notation your project requires. The output strings are formatted in standard CSS syntax and are ready to paste into stylesheets, design tokens, or inline styles without modification.

Who Uses This

CSS Developers

converting a brand HEX color to HSL so they can build a set of lighter and darker variants by adjusting only the lightness value in their CSS custom properties

Design System Engineers

translating RGB values from a Figma export into HEX codes for their design token JSON files that feed into a multi-platform component library

Data Visualization Specialists

switching between HSL and HEX formats when configuring chart libraries that accept color inputs in different notations depending on the charting framework

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my HEX conversion show a slightly different color in my design tool?
Differences usually stem from color profile mismatches. This converter uses standard sRGB, which is the web default. If your design tool is set to Display P3 or Adobe RGB, the same numeric values may appear different on screen.
Can I convert multiple colors at once?
The current version processes one color at a time to keep the interface simple and the conversion results instantly visible. For bulk conversion, run each color through the tool sequentially and collect the results.
Does the converter handle out-of-gamut HSL values?
The tool clamps saturation and lightness to their valid 0-100 percent ranges and hue to 0-360 degrees. If you enter values outside those bounds, they are automatically corrected to the nearest valid equivalent.
